Dental Exams & Cleanings
A clean, healthy smile starts with strong preventive care. Professional cleanings and routine exams help stop cavities early, prevent gum disease, freshen breath, and protect your long-term health — all in a comfortable, gentle visit.
Why dental cleanings are essential
Even with excellent brushing, plaque hardens into tartar — a rock-like deposit that you cannot remove at home. Professional cleanings remove these deposits and protect your gums from inflammation and infection.
Routine exams catch cavities early, screen for oral cancer, check for gum disease, and keep your whole mouth healthy. Cleanings and exams don’t just treat problems — they prevent them.
What the latest research shows
- 65.5% of U.S. adults had a dental visit (exam/cleaning) in the past 12 months. Source: CDC FastStats
- Nearly 26% of adults have untreated tooth decay — often preventable with regular cleanings.
- 46% of adults ≥30 have periodontal (gum) disease — professional cleanings are the primary prevention. Source: CDC MMWR Supplement (Eke et al.)
- Adults who receive routine preventive care have significantly lower rates of tooth loss.
What happens during your cleaning
Your visit is comfortable, modern, and tailored to your needs:
- Oral exam to check teeth, gums, and overall health
- Digital X-rays (low-dose) when needed
- Gentle removal of plaque and tartar using ultrasonic and hand instruments
- Polishing to smooth surfaces and brighten your smile
- Flossing and home-care coaching based on your needs
Insurance & Medicaid Coverage
Most dental plans classify cleanings and exams as preventive care — meaning they are usually covered at or near 100%.
- PPO Insurance: Most PPOs cover exams, cleanings, and X-rays at 100% (twice per year).
- Medicaid: Children’s cleanings are fully covered under federal EPSDT rules. Adult Medicaid coverage varies by state, but Illinois covers preventive cleanings for adults.
- No insurance? Our Membership Plan offers affordable preventive care with discounts.

Exams & Cleanings FAQs
How often should I get a dental exam and cleaning?
Every 6 months for most people; more often if you have gum disease or higher risk for cavities.
What is included in an exam and cleaning?
Exam of teeth and gums, oral cancer screening, professional removal of plaque and tartar, polishing, flossing, and home-care tips. Digital X-rays as needed.
Do cleanings hurt?
They are designed to be gentle. We can use topical anesthetic and light ultrasonic scaling. Tell us if you are sensitive and we will keep you comfortable.
Are fluoride and X-rays safe?
Yes. Professional fluoride strengthens enamel. Digital X-rays use very low radiation and are taken only when clinically needed.
Does insurance cover cleanings?
Most PPO plans cover preventive visits at or near 100 percent twice per year. Deductibles often do not apply to preventive services.
Does Illinois Medicaid cover preventive cleanings?
Children's preventive care is covered under EPSDT; adults are also covered for routine preventive visits. Frequency can vary by plan.
How long does a visit take?
About 45-60 minutes. If you need X-rays or have more buildup, plan for a bit more time.
Educational content only; not medical advice. Suitability and outcomes vary by patient. Recommendations are personalized after an exam and imaging.
