Nightguards for grinding & clenching — sleep better, protect your smile
If you wake with jaw tension, morning headaches, or notice chipped edges, a custom nightguard can make a big difference. Ours are digitally designed for a precise, comfortable fit—and real protection.
What is a nightguard—and why it matters
Protects teeth & restorations
A nightguard (occlusal guard) is a slim, custom device worn while you sleep. It cushions your teeth against grinding and clenching, reduces muscle load on your jaw joints, and helps prevent fractures, gum recession, and headaches linked to bruxism.
Signs you may need one
- Chipped, flattened, or sensitive teeth
- Morning jaw tightness or headaches
- Notches near the gumline (abfraction)
- Partner hears grinding at night
Benefits you’ll notice

Night guard FAQs
What is a night guard?
A custom, removable appliance worn during sleep to cushion your teeth and jaw muscles. It absorbs grinding/clenching forces to reduce wear, fractures, and soreness.
How is a custom guard different from a boil-and-bite?
Custom guards fit precisely, feel slimmer, and distribute forces better—making them more comfortable and protective. They also last longer and are easier to adjust.
Hard, soft, or dual-laminate—what’s best?
Hard acrylic often gives the most stable, durable protection. Dual-laminate combines a firm exterior with a cushioned interior. Soft guards may be used short-term. We’ll match the type to your bite and habits.
Upper or lower guard?
Either can work. We choose the arch that gives the best retention, comfort, and protection with your bite and dental work.
Will it help with jaw pain or morning headaches?
Often, yes. By reducing muscle overuse and tooth-to-tooth contact, many patients notice fewer headaches and less jaw tenderness.
What happens at my visits?
Visit 1: digital scan or impressions and bite record. Visit 2 (about 1–2 weeks later): delivery, fit check, and bite adjustment. Follow-ups fine-tune comfort as needed.
How long will it last?
With good care, many last several years. Heavy grinders may need more frequent replacement. Bring your guard to cleanings for quick checks and adjustments.
How do I clean it?
Rinse after use, brush gently with a soft brush (no abrasive toothpaste), and let it air-dry. Use a non-alcohol soak or specialty cleaner as directed.
Can it shift teeth or affect my bite?
Properly fitted guards are designed to protect—not move—teeth. We adjust your bite on delivery and at checkups to keep things balanced.
Is it safe with crowns, implants, or veneers?
Yes—guards help protect dental work from chipping and overload. We’ll ensure a stable, protective fit around your restorations.
Is it covered by insurance?
Many PPO plans offer coverage for custom occlusal guards; benefits vary by plan and diagnosis. Common codes include D9944 (hard, full arch) and D9945 (soft, full arch). We’ll verify and provide a written estimate.
What if I grind through it?
We’ll evaluate your wear pattern, adjust the bite, and may recommend a different material or thickness. Severe bruxism may also benefit from stress, sleep, or airway evaluation.
